Whole House Water Filtration Cost: $243 to $5,399 – Or 0.22¢ a Gallon

Published whole-house prices run from $243 for a Pentek housing set with no cartridges to $5,399 at the top of Culligan's range. The one system with a rated life, Homewyse's $652.70 3-stage listing, works out to about 0.22¢ a gallon over 300,000 gallons, before upkeep.

A still life photograph of whole and house and water on a plain table
Culligan says a whole-house system is installed where the main water line enters the home.

Spread over its rated life, one whole-house filter costs less than a quarter of a cent a gallon. That filter is Homewyse’s 3-stage system, listed from $652.70. Homewyse rates it for 300,000 gallons. Installed, the same page’s figures put it at about a third of a cent a gallon or more.

The upfront whole-house water filtration cost varies far more. Published prices on the pages below run from $243 to $5,399. The low end comes without cartridges, and the high end is the top of Culligan’s system range.

Verdict: Price the Cartridges and Labor, Not Just the Housing

Verdict: A whole-house filter fits a buyer who wants treated water at every tap. Its sticker price is where the bill starts, not where it ends.

The flaw, with its fix: The lowest price here, DiscountFilterStore’s $243 Pentek set, buys Pentek-brand housings, the canisters a filter cartridge sits in, “ready to accept your choice of cartridges.” The cartridges cost extra. Fix: get a cartridge price and an installation quote for every system before you compare.

Strengths: Water pressure holds up: a properly sized system keeps flow at about 5 gallons a minute, Quality Water Treatment says. The one rated system here works out to 0.22¢ to 0.24¢ a gallon over its life, before installation.

Who should skip → buy a kitchen unit: If you only want better-tasting drinking water, buy a point-of-use filter, meaning one that treats a single tap. For an under-sink unit, NexGen Air & Plumbing puts the average at $170–$580 with labor. Quality Water Treatment says a point-of-use reverse osmosis (RO) or under-sink carbon filter “gets you there.”

A Whole-House Filter Sits Where the Main Line Enters

Culligan describes a whole house system as one “installed where your main water line enters your home.” Every tap, shower and appliance after that point draws water that has gone through it. That placement is also why labor and a permit show up on the bill, and NexGen prices both.

Published Upfront Prices Run From $243 to $5,399

How we evaluated: each price is the figure the seller or estimator publishes on its own page. Cost per gallon and per year appear only where a page gives a rated life, and one page does.

Prices are as each page listed them, read October 2026. The Homewyse row carries that page’s May 2026 date.

System What the price covers Published price ¢/gal over rated life $/yr over rated life
Pentek 2- and 3-housing set (DiscountFilterStore) Housings only; cartridges chosen separately $243–$337 No rating listed No rating listed
Tier1 granular activated carbon (GAC) and catalytic carbon (DiscountFilterStore) Unit for chlorine and chloramine reduction $289–$497 No rating listed No rating listed
Basic single-stage unit (Quality Water Treatment) 1 stage From around $300 No rating listed No rating listed
3-stage whole home system (Homewyse, May 2026) 1 system, non-discounted retail; rated 3 yr, 300,000 gal $652.70–$733.77 0.2176–0.2446 $217.57–$244.59
Culligan whole home systems (Culligan) Varies by system chosen; installation not stated About $1,999–$5,399 No rating listed No rating listed

In the Tier1 row, chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, which some water utilities use to disinfect water. Catalytic carbon is a processed form of carbon filter material.

Cost per Gallon Runs From 0.22¢ for the Unit to 0.82¢ All-In

Homewyse lists non-discounted retail pricing of $652.70 to $733.77 for one 3-stage system. It rates that system for a “3 yr 300,000 gal tank life.” The same page puts the installed national average at $990–$1,245.

Here is each total spread over 300,000 gallons and 3 years:

What the total covers 3-year total ¢ per gallon Per year
System only (Homewyse retail) $652.70–$733.77 0.2176–0.2446 $217.57–$244.59
System installed (Homewyse national average) $990–$1,245 0.3300–0.4150 $330.00–$415.00
Installed, plus 3 years of upkeep at $150–$400 a year $1,440–$2,445 0.4800–0.8150 $480.00–$815.00

The first two rows are one-time costs. Homewyse prices nothing after year 3.

Upkeep runs $150–$400 a year, per Quality Water Treatment. At the low end that is less than the unit’s own $217.57 a year; at the high end, more than its $244.59. That estimate covers whole-house systems in general, not this Homewyse unit, so read the last row as a rough budget, not a forecast.

At the installed price, the filter costs about 90¢ to $1.14 a day. With upkeep added, it comes to about $1.32 to $2.23 a day.

Installation Labor Adds $200 to $600 to the Equipment Price

NexGen Air & Plumbing puts whole-house installation labor at $200–$600. The same breakdown lists water testing at $100–$300 and a permit at $30–$500.

Homewyse gives a national installed average of $990–$1,245 for one system on its May 2026 page. That is $337.30 to $511.23 above its $652.70–$733.77 system price. The gap is not labor alone: Homewyse’s line items also cover job supplies, an equipment allowance and debris disposal.

Partial subtotal: $243 Pentek set + $200 labor + $30 permit = $473. It leaves out the cartridges and the water test, so it is not an installed price.

Other pages publish totals that go past the sticker price. Only the first two rows say they include installation.

A Whole-House Filter Does Not Soften Water or Remove Fluoride

Whole-house systems leave 2 jobs undone, per Quality Water Treatment: they “won’t soften water or remove fluoride on their own,” so you may still need a softener or an RO unit. A softener changes hardness. A filter reduces what its maker names, such as chlorine.

That second machine has its own price. NexGen says an under-sink RO unit alone can cost up to $950. NexGen gives that as a ceiling, not a typical price, so check real listings before you budget. Compare reverse osmosis system prices for the whole home or the kitchen first.

Test Your Water Before You Price a System

  1. Get a water test first. NexGen lists testing at $100–$300 in its cost breakdown.
  2. Match each contaminant on the report to a system whose listing names it. Tier1’s listing, for example, names chlorine and chloramine.
  3. If the report shows hardness, price a softener, because a whole-house filter won’t soften water on its own.
  4. If it shows fluoride, price RO alongside the filter, for the same reason.
  5. If cloudy water is the problem, ask for a turbidity reading. EPA defines turbidity as “a measure of the cloudiness of water” and uses it to judge how well filtration works. A reading taken before installation gives you a number to check again afterwards.
  6. Ask each seller, in writing, whether the price covers cartridges, labor and a permit.

FAQ

Does Culligan’s $1,999–$5,399 Range Include Installation?

Culligan’s page does not say. Ask for an installed quote in writing.

Do I Need a Permit?

It depends on where you live. Call your local building department before you accept a quote.

Can One Under-Sink RO Unit Replace a Whole-House Filter?

They do different jobs. An under-sink unit treats one tap. A whole-house filter treats the main line, so it reaches every shower and appliance too.
